GRE Exam Syllabus
GRE General Test Syllabus
Verbal Reasoning

Verbal reasoning aims to analyze the candidate’s ability and capacity to comprehend text and synthesize vital information. Verbal reasoning comprises comprehension, articles, idioms, sentence correction, antonyms, and synonyms, etc. There are three questions in the verbal comprehension section: completion of the text, reading comprehension, and sentence equivalency.

GRE Score calculation for Quant and Verbal section

The total GRE is marked in the verbal and quant areas majorly. Two major factors that influence the GRE score calculation:-
Each verbal and quant section comprises measures. Computer-based tests are adaptive and also determine the test’s difficulty level. The first measure has simple questions, whereas the second measure is quite complex. Please note that the second section depends on how you perform in the first one.

GRE Score calculation is based on Equating

The September GRE is relatively more manageable than the August exam. ETS does not show any clear scoring process; however, it mentions answering all the questions correctly to increase high scoring points. Let’s discuss how the analytical writing section of GRE is calculated-

  • Trained rater reads the essay and marks on a scale of 0-6
  • The ETS made software e-rater analyzes the essay and give a score based on multiple areas
  • If the e-rater and human reader’s score matches, then the final score is shared based on those two scores
  • If there’s a vast difference or any discretion, then a second human reader is allotted to review the document.

Subject test score calculation

As mentioned, the GRE subject test comprises six subjects that candidates can choose according to their preference. The score here is also calculated using the equating method.
In the biology section, the accurate answers for every content are added to the subscore.
In the psychology and physics part, the subscore consists of correct answers in each content and the correct answer of the whole sheet.

GRE, Graduate Record Examinations is an internationally accepted standardized examination that is designed to measure overall academic readiness in students for graduate schools. Applicants seeking admission in master’s, doctoral degrees, or MBA programs across various universities worldwide can assess their readiness in various academic fields. The duration of the GRE examination is about 3 hours and 45 minutes. Offered as both paper-based and computer-based exams as per the convenience of the applicants, GRE scores are an important selection factor along with degree and academic scores for granting admission.

Conducted and managed by the Education Testing System (ETS), the GRE examination, according to ETS, aims to measure verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, analytical writing, and critical thinking skills of the applicants acquired over a long period of learning. Offered as a computer-based exam, the GRE General Test is administered at various testing centers. GRE Subject Tests are designed to test the knowledge in the specific areas of Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology. A high score on the GRE will positively impact your application to graduate or business school. So, look at everything starting from guidelines, GRE exam eligibility, and important takeaways of the GRE examination before you start preparing for it.

Eligibility criteria for GRE entrance examination

Age criteria

ETS, the conducting body of the GRE examination has not set any official age criteria or prerequisite for test-takers. There is no upper age limit set for candidates wanting to appear for their GRE test. The GRE examination is intended for applicants that are graduates or undergraduate students who are about to graduate. The test is taken for taking admission to master’s, MBA, and doctoral degrees. It is not meant for high school or school-level graduates. The level of difficulty is set as per the standards of graduate students, so the ideal applicants are usually the graduates. A good percentage of GRE applicants are above 30 years of age.

Education qualification

ETS has not announced any official statement regarding the qualification required to appear for the GRE Exam. However, candidates are expected to have a graduate degree in any discipline from a recognized university. There is no official educational requirement. Since the test is meant for evaluating the readiness of graduate students to take admission to postgraduate programs, the ideal academic degree would be a full-time recognized graduate degree.

Grades and scores

There is no official eligibility for the GRE entrance exam in terms of previous academic scores and grades. There are no minimum cut-off marks. However, this should not be confused with the academic score requirement to get admission to universities and colleges. To take the GRE examination, you don’t need any minimum or maximum score in graduation or high-level school examination.

Language

Fluency in English is important. The test takers must be proficient in English speaking and writing skills. To take admission in master’s programs and degrees in reputed Universities of English-speaking countries, applicants must be fluent in English.

Work experience

There are no official eligibility criteria in terms of work experience. For GRE, work experience will not have any relevance. Applicants can be fresher or industry experts, which will not matter anyway in the GRE examination.

Documentation

The applicants appearing for the GRE examination need to provide a valid passport. If they don’t have a passport, they need to produce a National Photo ID proof or Military Identification Card.

Conclusion

GRE scores are used and accepted by top-ranked Universities in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and Europe. It is an ideal entrance examination to prove the overall academic readiness of undergraduate and graduate students. GRE is an important factor in the selection process. To know more about eligibility and guidelines about GRE, consult with the academic counselors of AESPL.

Wondering how to send GRE scores to universities? The first thing one needs to know is that the test fee is inclusive of the GRE scorecard for up to four colleges. If a candidate has opted for a computer-delivered test, he/she will be asked to select the score receivers at the test-center. In case a paper-delivered test type has been opted for, the candidate will need to select the score receiver at the time of registration.

The score reports indicate both your official report that comes after giving the GRE and the reports which you will be sending to various universities. You also get a ScoreSelect option which helps you choose scores that you can send to chosen institutions. You can send your best GRE scores with this handy system. If you wish to send your scores to more universities or want to send your scores after the day of the test, you will need to pay US$27 (per recipient) and order additional reports. However, colleges don’t view the scores unless the complete application for admission has been sent.

How to send GRE scores to universities?

In case you were thinking about how to send GRE scores to universities through ETS, you should know that the scores will be available for your perusal within the ETS account itself. They will be dispatched to all designated universities within 10-15 days from your date of testing. Here is the procedure to be followed:

  • Login to your official ETS account.
  • Go to MY GRE Home page and choose Send Additional Score Reports. This comes under the Scores tab.
  • You will find the option named On Screen: Test Registration.
  • Thereafter, you can use the option called Send Additional Score Reports.

GRE and ETS scores will provide an option to choose Most Recent scores or All scores in the last 5 years. This can be done for up to four universities absolutely free of cost.

Sending GRE scores on the day of the test:

You will get the unofficial GRE quantitative reasoning and verbal section scores on your test day. Analytical writing is assessed by examiners, and they are thus published with the final GRE results, 10 to 15 days after the test date. You can send your GRE results to four institutions without any payable fees. You can choose these institutions after completing the test. One doesn’t need to know school codes to send scores as the codes will be there in the computer system.

Sending GRE scores after the test:

10-15 days are usually needed for getting the official scores. You can send the same after the day of the test through this method:

  • Login to the official ETS account and order added score reports that will be sent to any particular institution.
  • You may apply via mail, online or fax.
  • Choose your best score over the last 5 years and dispatch it to your chosen institutions.

You may also send your scores prior to submitting the college application. In such a scenario, you will not have to state the fact that you have sent the scores already. You will be selecting to dispatch your scores beforehand so weigh this decision with a lot of care and caution. If the recipient does not have a listing, reach out to ETS prior to appearing for the GRE. The pre-chosen four institutions will be automatically given the official GRE score reports via ETS.

If you apply for Additional Score Reports to be sent to more institutions, expect the same to reach within 5 days at least. If you are applying through fax or mail, it may require 10 business days. If you have applied to reinstate scores, it will require two weeks as per estimates. You should have sufficient time in hand for sending the scores prior to the deadline for admissions. Candidates receive GRE scores around 10-15 days post the date of testing. The scores will be electronically sent to you and show up in the ETS account. Most institutions choose to get these scores electronically via the ETS Data Manager platform or the server-to-server facility which is automated.

The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is an evaluative test required to qualify for admissions in many graduate schools in Canada, the United States, Germany, and other countries. Started in 1936 by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, the test is administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS). The GRE test assesses Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning skills of students. This blog can help candidates learn how to score 170 in GRE quant while preparing a strategy for the test. But let us first understand the significance of scoring 170.

Why is it important to score 170 in quant GRE?

Apart from the cumulative GRE score students also get individual percentile scores in the three sections of the test. A score of 170 is considered the top score in the sections of verbal and quantitative ability. The quantitative section of the GRE test assesses the candidates’ expertise in high school level mathematics and comprises algebra, geometry, arithmetic, and data analysis. Scoring between 165 and 170 in quant will earn you a top percentile score. The section tests the candidates’ aptitude for problem-solving and quantitative reasoning. It has around 40 to 60 questions that have to be solved in 70 to 105 minutes.

Sections of GRE

The 3 hours and 45 minutes long test is divided into 6 sections, one of which is unidentified or unscored. The first section of the GRE test is always analytical writing. However, the sections of verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and unscored may be in random order. Here is a brief overview of each section of the GRE test:

  • Analytical writing assessment: This section tests the candidate’s ability to evaluate presented evidence, dissect arguments, analyze facts, and present a point of view. The candidates are asked to present their viewpoint through 2 essays. You would be asked to analyze a given paragraph and address the topic based on your viewpoint in the first question. The second question includes an argument which you need to critique and discuss. The total time allocated for this section is 60 minutes and the score ranges between 0 and 6.
  • Verbal reasoning: The verbal reasoning assessment includes aspects like antonyms, synonyms, analogies, sentence completion, and comprehension. It has two parts and the tests are scored between 130 and 170. It is a difficult section for non-native English speakers. The 40 to 60 questions in the section have to be answered in 60 to 90 minutes. • Quantitative reasoning: Quantitative reasoning or Quant evaluates the students’ ability to solve problems and analyze quantitative data through mathematical techniques. The questions in this section can be solved using high-school-level mathematics. Quantitative reasoning also has two parts, each comprising 20-30 quant questions. The time allowed to complete the section is 70 to 110 minutes.

Why are students unable to score 170?

Despite thorough preparation and the desire to succeed, students may not be able to score 170 in quant GRE due to some common mistakes. Here are some of the common errors that prevent candidates from scoring high in their GRE quant:

  • Over-reliance on calculators: While the GRE allows candidates to use calculators during the test, it can have a detrimental effect on their performance. Calculators can make it difficult for the candidates to think clearly while switching back and forth between the device and the test. Candidates might also commit errors while keying numbers or even lose track of the step that they were on while solving the problem.
  • Rushing through: The candidates are generally under immense time pressure and often get only 90 seconds to solve a problem. If they haven’t practiced solving problems within this given time frame, they may end up spending too much time on one problem. They will have to rush through the other questions. Over that, the GRE test is adaptive, meaning, the questions adapt themselves to the student’s ability and get more difficult.
  • Not managing math anxiety: Candidates can get disheartened by a particular type of question that they get wrong repeatedly during practice. This can cause undue anxiety about those types of questions and seeing them in the main test can make them nervous and prone to committing mistakes.
  • Calculation errors: Since quantitative analysis is a very precise field of study, getting one small calculation wrong or missing a sign can cause an error. Candidates may make simple calculation errors leading to a wrong solution to the problem.

How to score a perfect 170 in GRE quant?

Even average candidates can secure good marks in their GRE quant with proper preparation and practice. Here are some preparatory tips that can make the process of getting a perfect score easier:

  • Attempt mock tests: An important part of preparing for GRE quant is to accustom yourself to the test pattern and the types of questions. Attempt the mock tests sincerely and build up stamina for the real test.
  • Tackle word problems slowly: The underlying concept of the word problem questions needs to be understood properly as a single word can alter its meaning. It is important to familiarize yourself with English-to-math translation tables.
  • Do not rely excessively on calculators: As most GRE quant questions are meant to be answered within three minutes, it is unlikely to involve elaborate calculations. Do not use a calculator unless you really need it, practice mental math instead.
  • Move over where needed: There are 20 questions in each quant section and only 35 minutes to solve them. You cannot spare more than 2 minutes on any of the questions without taking that time away from another question. If a question seems too stubborn, move on. You can revisit it if you have spare time.
  • Backsolve wherever possible: When the options or answer choices involve numbers, you can use backsolving for plugging the answers into questions and working out a solution. Choose the most likely answer and then backsolve it.
  • Don’t abandon your method and logic: There may be questions of different difficulty levels and complexity. You need to evaluate the information and select the approach applicable to the particular question. Apply the various approaches and methods in a logical succession so that you can address all problems objectively.
  • Study the whole graph or table: The data interpretation questions may seem time-consuming and complex. However, they can be managed effectively by thoroughly studying the graph or the table. Take note of the titles, units, and labels so that you can identify the data trend early in the solution. This way, you can draw conclusions faster and without much hassle.

The candidates need to extensively attempt the mock tests to gain a thorough understanding of the test pattern and the realistic challenges of the test. The candidates should also take advantage of the ‘no negative marking’ policy of the GRE test and attempt all the questions.
